Many DMS members joined and began using the Woodshop when the selection of tools was limited. Over time, as the number of tools has grown, the official training on safely operating the newer additions wasn't always implemented for the longer-term users.

However, after sustaining frequent damage to costly equipment and both actual injuries and "near misses," the Woodshop Committee chose to implement a series of classes that would allow students to apply the skills required to operate the equipment to an actual project. They also committed to eventually putting RFID interlocks on all of the power tools to ensure that only members who have completed the appropriate safety and equipment training can access equipment.

Upon completion of the first three classes, each student will have made and leave with a maple and walnut edge grain cutting board! During the fourth class, we will turn the simple cutting board into an handled serving board.
