Agenda Items for Discussion and Decision-making

Woodshop Suspensions and Bans

The Woodshop has recently become a steady-state mess. We need to implement a system for revoking people's authorization to use the Woodshop if they leave the shop in a dirty, unsafe state. This item should not be tabled and needs to be decided as soon as possible. This system should be a part of the official, adopted rules.

Second Dust Collector

- Review existing plans and confirm still accurate

- Take inventory of existing ducting and connectors

- Identify BOM needed to install

- Get missing parts

- Identify what we need

- Source what we need

- Give someone an ordering take away

- Identify an install date (given expected acquisition date and a date that works for everyone)

Bigger Planer

- Discuss exact planer to purchase with money allocated

- Identify when to order etc. (after 2nd DC installation?)

Identify a Monthly Work Day

Assign tools to people (adopt a tool)

Class Scheduling

- Confirm existing offerings

- Discuss new class offerings

- Identify who wants to continue to schedule the classes

Getting Rid of Superfluous Tools

- Determine plan for extra jointer - possibly already sold?

- Horizontal sander - Craig’s List?

Green wood storage

Turning Tools

- Identify what turning tools are needed to help Matt Keim and others teach etc.

Minutes

Meeting called to order ~20:00

AGENDA ITEM: Woodshop Suspensions and Bans
-----------------------------------------------------
• Andrew Z. handed out copies of DMS Wood Shop Rules to be promulgated and adopted. They are:
   1. Completion of Wood Shop Basics is required before using any tool
   2. Protective eye wear must be worn at all times
   3. All operators must wear closed toe shoes
   4. Inspect all tools before use and report any machine malfunctions
   5. Contact Wood Shop committee member or users manual for tool assistance
   6. Secure loose clothing and long hair before operating machinery
   7. Be sure to turn on dust collection and ventilation before powering on machines
   8. Ear protection should be worn when working around power tools
   9. Clean all tools and work areas immediately after use
   10. Use your brain and be considerate to all members and tools

• While any Wood Shop committee member is always welcome and expected to help others and point out Wood Shop rules and best practices, once these official rules are posted/promulgated,
certain senior Wood Shop members (list TDB) will be authorized to enforce them in an excellent way
• Wood Shop email address should be added to any signage or official Wood Shop postings or communications

AGENDA ITEM: Second Dust Collector
-----------------------------------------------------
• New dust collector (donated by Jimmy Arledge...thanks Jimmy!) will be installed weekend of July 23; M. Blatz to post general notices on DMS Wood Shop forum and in & around Wood Shop
• Initial set-up will be using the 33 gallon dust bin; it's understood this will need to be changed very frequently as a result
• Auto dust collector start and auto blast gates discussion will be taken off line pending fuller understanding of funding need & available
• No, wait...we're discussing it now; Product can be seen at http://www.grngate.com/; there will need to be a separate controller on each dust control unit, each controller can manage up
to 8 blast gates; some money is involved, but it wasn't quite clear how much; we are moving ahead with them anyway
• Brian D. made a passionate case for cleaning the main dust collector filters at least once a day and explained the process; all agreed that made sense...

AGENDA ITEM: Bigger Planer
-----------------------------------------------------
• Brian D. to follow up with electrician services to provide 3-Phase power for the new planer we are expecting in the near future
• If a planned date of order or arrival was discussed or announced, I missed it :-(

AGENDA ITEM: Identify a Monthly Work Day
-----------------------------------------------------
• In support of better maintaining tool up-time and readiness, concept of Adopt-a-Tool program was discussed again
• Similar to Adopt-a-Highway litter efforts, this program is volunteer based, but would require a serious commitment from any participants
• Multiple volunteers per tool will allow effort to be better spread out among the Wood Shop members/users, as well as allow a broader knowledge-base to share
• M. Blatz will design a tool/volunteer list for review, to then be provisioned on the DMS Workshop Wiki

AGENDA ITEM: Assign tools to people (adopt a tool)
-----------------------------------------------------
• Starting in August, the 1st Thursday of EVERY month from 7:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. will be set aside for general Wood Shop cleaning, organization, and maintenance (think of it as Adult Swim at
the community pool)
• Alex R. to schedule these sessions on the DMS Event Calendar

AGENDA ITEM: Class Scheduling
-----------------------------------------------------
• Discussion became to 'free form' to document clearly; A lot of discussion about new class scheduling calendar system by Alex R. (sounded great!); long-n-short of this item: more classes to be taught

AGENDA ITEM: Getting Rid of Superfluous Tools
-----------------------------------------------------
• 6" jointer has been sold; was not specified (or at least heard by me) if there is a date certain for pick-up or delivery
• Andrew Z. to list 2nd horizontal edge sander on Craig's List
• Discussed what to do with DeWalt Thickness Planer when we get new Powermatic planer; no clear decision was made (right?)
• Suggestion made that we think about looking to a future in a new 'Space where, with some appropriate planning and management, we might be able to provision a smaller Wood Shop annex with a few
duplicate tools (like planer and jointer) dedicated to training & teaching classes

AGENDA ITEM: Green wood storage
-----------------------------------------------------
• Design was submitted to Andrew Z. to review (w/Jeff C.?) for costs and fitness-for-purpose
• Approval to proceed still pending

AGENDA ITEM: Turning Tools
-----------------------------------------------------
• John G. pointed out the significant increase in lathe usage, especially with Matt K. generously providing so much of his time to train and give classes; Also noted an expectation that
Jimmy A. might begin doing same
• Andrew Z. and Matt K. indicated they had been communicating and coordinating on a list of needed lathe tools and accessories (e.g. chucks, gouges, etc.) given the increase in activity; Andrew
gave the O.K. to Matt to move ahead with ordering, although it wasn't clear if a specific set of tools and accessories was specifically agreed yet...TBD
• Jimmy A. has donated (or loaned?) several gouges; they need handles and ferrules bought or made for them, though; Maybe a good opportunity for a class!!
• Our poor little red rolling cabinet is about to give up the ghost :-( So as we have/get more tools, accessories, and general lathe related activities, storage for all of it will need to
be addressed

AGENDA ITEM: Other Business
-----------------------------------------------------
• Wood Shop will be closed weekend of July 23/24 for Dust Control upgrades and other general reorganization
• Science Committee representatives were in attendance; they are interested in knowing the 5 most used (or interesting?) types of wood most used (or most interesting) in the Wood Shop
for a materials science study/project across the whole MakerSpace; Sounded very interesting (or maybe they just blinded me with Science!)

Meeting Adjourned ~21:55
