Committees are voluntary groups, formed by members in order to achieve certain goals.
To join this committee, contact the committee chairperson. See Rules and Policies#Committees for more information.

The Woodshop is one of the most active and popular shops at the Makerspace.

The Woodshop Committee's responsibilities are to:

  • Establish safety guidelines for woodworking and use of power tools.
  • Create necessary training materials and certifications that allow makers to effectively and safely use the various pieces of equipment in the Woodshop.
  • Maintain the order, organization, safety, cleanliness, and utility of the Woodshop.

Banned Materials

  • Pressure Treated Wood Please do not use Pressure Treated Wood in Woodshop
  • SYP (aka Southern Yellow Pine) on the planer, jointer. A bit of the discussion surrounding this can be read here.
  • Bark No bark on any machine with blades. A bit of the discussion surrounding this can be read here.

Using the power tools in the Woodshop requires training as follows:

Woodshop Basics
an introduction to the basic tools and best safety practices of the Woodshop. Students who complete the course will be certified for use on:
  • Miter saw
  • Jointer
  • Planer
  • Table saws
  • Band saws
  • Compound sander
Woodshop Lathe Basics
Introduces/re-introduces students to the lathe, including:
  • carbide tipped "Easy Wood" turning tools
  • turning between centers
  • shop rules
  • general expectations
  • wood working safe/best practices
CNC Router Basics Course & Completion of the Practical Exam is required to use the MultiCam CNC Router

See the calendar for scheduled woodshop classes.

Please note: Though we work to avoid this, prior certifications may be nullified in the event of significant tool/tooling changes. Please check with the current chair for more information.

Age Requirements

Minimum age to use any powered equipment in the Woodshop is 18 years old, unless noted otherwise on the tool's page.

For the band saw and scroll saw, under 18 is ok with a parent/guardian actively supervising.

If we have a minor who is wanting to do a woodworking project they can ask pretty much anyone in the woodshop and we will make the cuts for them, or run the jointer/planer, then they can finish with sanding, glue-ups, or hand tools. We want to encourage our younger makers but safety has to be the deciding factor.

Local Vendors

Hardwood Lumber Company

A woodworking shop who sells wood too. They have a large assortment of local and exotics and even a wall of selected specialty or figured woods to pick from for that special project. I thought pricing was great as well as customer service. Since they are a woodworking shop they can also flatten a table top for you in their rotex planer or wide belt sander for a fee. I had them flatten a burl slab and it saved me a ton of time for $30. Another big plus is the wall of cutoffs that they sell at a discount. Pricing is not set on the cutoffs in my experience but I bought a lot of mahogany for cheap that fit my needs. They also told me that if DMS/members ordered at least $200 of wood at a time they would deliver it to DMS for free, great for members who do not have a truck.

10 minutes from the Space.

Plano Mill

Local small sawmill that deals in live edge and other lumber products. He will also cut a log to order - either one you have or one he has on hand in this “pile.”

Dakota Premium Hardwoods

This is a large wood supplier for the area that typically deals with contractors. They sell a large variety of hardware, veneer, formica, wood...etc. If you go there ask for Max as he is working hard to figure out ways to support DMS. They will let you pick through the wood to select what you want but put the stack back together when you are done. They will provide free delivery to DMS for all orders over $300. Max seems very eager to find ways to work with us which is a plus.

McKinney Hardwood

Fantastic prices and selection. Domestic, Exotics, Burls. By Appointment only, as it is run more for a love of wood working than as a business. Worth the visit.

Woods of Mission Timbers

Located in Sanger. Native Texas woods such as Bois D'Arc to Cypress, Cedar, Mesquite. Great pricing, e.g. $5 per board foot for Mesquite.

Very popular national woodworking store that carries all the essentials for your woodworking needs. If your a Festool fan this is a good place to see a lot of what they have to offer. I asked if they gave DMS members their standard 10% club discount and they gave it to me, not sure if they were suppose to. Always worth asking for.

Very popular national woodworking store that carries all the essentials for your woodworking needs. Very similar to Woodcraft in their offerings. I like that they have a lot of innovations every year that come from woodworkers. Dallas Makerspace members eligible for discount on regular-priced items.

Wood World

Woodworking store that also carries all the essentials for your woodworking projects. I think what sets them apart is the amount of items they have to offer to woodturners. By far the largest selection of tools and wood for a woodturner that I have seen in one store. Dallas Makerspace members eligible for discount on regular-priced items.

Rugby Architectural Building Supplies

off Regal Row and Harry Hines Targeted at architects and designers. deep selection. Many types of woods, veneers, different materials. great pricing.
